The small settlement of Hayes sits at the northern edge of this high plains landscape, situated near the intersection of Hayes Rd and Rolling Green Pl. This area of central South Dakota is defined by a dense network of intermittent drainages that have carved the terrain into a series of ridges and plateaus. Significant watercourses such as Plum Cr, Wagonhound Cr, and Cottonwood Cr create a complex topographical pattern, punctuated by distinctive high points like Round Top and Lookout Point.
