Clinchco and Haysi anchor this mountainous section of Dickenson County, where the deep valleys of the Russell Fork and the McClure River dictate the settlement patterns of the Cumberland Plateau. The landscape is defined by its complex industrial and transport infrastructure, featuring a remarkable series of railroad tunnels including the Sykes Mill Tunnel, Goff Tunnel, and McClure Tunnel. These engineering feats allow rail lines to pierce the steep ridges like Backbone Ridge and Big Ridge, connecting coal-patch towns such as Steinman and Tenso. In the northwest, the Pound River feeds into the John W. Flannagan Reservoir, a major hydrological feature that transformed the local terrain. The area's high relief is further evidenced by numerous named gaps, such as Puckett Gap and Martha Gap, which serve as critical passage points through the dense network of ridges.
