Helena National Forest dominates this mountain landscape along the border of Lewis and Clark and Broadwater counties. The area is defined by a dense network of drainages and canyons, most notably the winding course of Hellgate Gulch and the prominent Avalanche Gulch to the south. These steep corridors have long been centers of resource extraction, as evidenced by the Argo Mine and numerous scattered prospects found throughout the Townsend Ranger District.

Many of the smaller gulches carry family or descriptive names that suggest a history of early prospecting and livestock grazing, such as Sheriff Gulch, Hunters Gulch, and Gebish Gulch. High-elevation ridgelines separate these deep ravines, where Magpie Creek and Thompson Creek flow through the northern reaches. The terrain is characterized by its isolation and the systematic naming of nearly every significant topographical fold, from Never Sweat Gulch to Doolittle Gulch.
