The Rio Grande headwaters and a complex system of high-altitude water management define this portion of the Rio Grande National Forest. Numerous reservoirs, including the Continental Reservoir in the northwest and Spring Cr Reservoir to the east, illustrate the engineering of the San Juan Mountains' water resources. The landscape is marked by extreme elevation changes between Hermit Peak and deep incisions like Box Canyon and Crooked Canyon.
