The small settlement of Heron sits along the banks of the Clark Fork RD corridor, where the landscape is defined by the expansive Cabinet Gorge Reservoir. The terrain transitions sharply from the waterway to the high elevations of the Cabinet Mountains to the north and the Coeur d'Alene Mountains to the south. This area within the Kaniksu National Forest is marked by a complex network of forest roads and trails, such as Star Gulch Trl and Pillick Ridge Trl, which navigate the steep drainages of Napoleon Gulch and Hamilton Gulch.
