Herrick sits at the northern edge of this survey, where the street grid of Main St and North St meets the rural agricultural landscape of the Shelby and Fayette county line. The terrain is defined by the winding course of the Kaskaskia River and its numerous tributaries, including Mitchell Creek and Becks Creek, which carve deep drainages through the land. The presence of the Dean Hills in the southern portion of the quadrangle provides a notable change in elevation compared to the level farmsteads further north.
