About this map

Hillham and the famous resort corridor of French Lick anchor this 2022 survey, which covers the intersection of Orange, Martin, and Dubois Counties. The landscape is defined by the sharp topography of Emmons Ridge and Coal Mine Ridge, separated by a network of hollows like Rattlesnake Hollow and Happy Hollow. Extensive acreage is dedicated to the Hoosier National Forest, showing the modern protected status of these southern Indiana woodlands. Local history is deeply etched into the hillsides, documented through numerous small family and community burial grounds including Hawkins Cem, Wininger Cem, and Robinson Cem. The meandering course of the Lost River cuts across the northern half of the sheet near Roland, while modern recreational and transit infrastructure appears in the form of the French Lick Resort Hiking Trails and the French Lick Municipal Airport.
