About this map

The Poteau River carves a central valley between the high ridges of East Poteau Mountain and Chalybeate Mountain in this early 1980s survey of western Arkansas. Much of the western terrain is protected within the Ouachita National Forest, where features like Hickory Knob and Wolf Ridge overlook the winding Kansas City Southern rail line. This corridor served as a vital transportation link for small settlements like Hon, Bryan, and Stewart that grew along the tracks.
