The Pearl River snakes through the borderlands of Copiah and Simpson Counties, defining the drainage patterns of this central Mississippi landscape. This 2015 update shows the rural communities of Gatesville, Hopewell, and Ruby connected by a network of timber and farm roads. The prominence of family and community burial grounds, such as Zion Hill Cem, Palestine Cem, and Pine Ridge Cem, provides significant value for genealogists tracing local lineage. Notable crossings including the Gatesville Bridge and Hopewell Bridge span the river, linking these disparate settlements across the floodplain. The terrain is deeply etched by a complex hydrography including Weeks Mill Cr, Brushy Cr, and Reno Cr, which converge toward the river valley. In addition to the river, significant water bodies like Allen Lake and Little Lake mark the low-lying areas, while higher elevations are traversed by rural routes like Old MS-27 Loop.
