Hornick serves as the central hub for this corner of Woodbury and Monona counties, situated where the Chicago and North Western Railway intersects the agricultural grid. The landscape is defined by an extensive engineering network designed to manage water across the Missouri River floodplain. A complex system of drainage infrastructure, including the Garretson Outlet Ditch, West Fork Ditch, and Wolf Creek Drainage Ditch, crisscrosses the lowlands to reclaim the soil for farming. To the east, the flat plains give way to more varied terrain, marked by Cottonwood Hollow and Tom King Hollow. These features highlight the transition from the highly modified drainage basins of the west, where Whiskey Cr and Farmers Ditch flow, to the natural elevations of the loess hills region.
