The Continental Divide traverses the high country of Rio Arriba County in this 2013 survey, cutting across a landscape defined by significant drainage basins and named alpine waters. The central feature, Horse Lake, is surrounded by a complex system of smaller bodies including Cinnamon Lake, Enbom Lake, and the spring-fed Paiz Pond. The terrain is steeply defined by the Tecolote Rim and the massive Horse Lake Mesa, which rises above the deep cuts of Boiler Canyon and Sulphur Canyon.
