Fire Island stretches across the southern half of this coastal survey, separating the Great South Beach from the interior waters of Great South Bay. Along this thin barrier strand, the communities of Davis Park and Bayberry Dunes sit isolated between the dunes and the Atlantic Ocean. The northern shoreline of the bay is more developed, featuring the village of Bellport and the Bellport Village Golf Course positioned near Howells Creek. To the east, the edge of Shirley appears near Smith Point, where the barrier island begins its eastward reach. This maritime landscape is defined by its complex network of small islands and points, including John Boyle Island, Pelican Island, and Whalehouse Point, which serve as critical landmarks for navigating the shallow reaches of Bellport Bay and Patchogue Bay.
