Humbolt Hills define the high ground of this borderlands survey, where the state line between Montana and South Dakota meets the Black Hills Meridian. This sparse, high-plains landscape in Carter County and Harding County is shaped by the drainage patterns of Boxelder Creek to the north and Humbolt Creek winding through the center. While the region is primarily defined by its topographic relief, evidence of energy exploration is present through several Oil Wells and a Drill Hole scattered across the township grids. Small water sources like a Spring and the seasonal path of Shaw Creek provide the only breaks in the arid terrain, illustrating the remote and specialized land use common to this portion of the northern Great Plains during the late twentieth century.
