The Touchet River valley defines the lower half of this landscape, serving as the primary corridor for settlement and transit between Huntsville and the outskirts of Dayton. Along this riparian stretch, the Dayton Lumber Company Mill Pond and Touchet Valley Airport sit near small rail-side hamlets including Varna, Dumas, and Long. These communities are situated at the mouths of numerous coulees and hollows that drain the surrounding uplands, creating a network of family-named landmarks like McKay Hollow, Kellogg Hollow, and Payne Hollow.

Upland areas are dominated by large-scale agricultural patterns and a grid of rural roads such as Whiskey Creek Rd and Rose Gulch Rd. The presence of the Pioneer Cem near Ward Rd provides a genealogical anchor for the region's early farming families.
