The Wabash River meanders across the border of Illinois and Indiana, carving a complex landscape of backwaters and bends such as Aurora Bend and Blue Hole. This riverine environment is defined by its oxbows and marshy lowlands, including Muskrat Pond, Little Grassy Pond, and the elongated Oxendine Bayou. The settlement of Darwin sits on the western bank, while the community of Hutton is positioned further inland to the east.

Family history is preserved in numerous rural burial grounds scattered across the terrain, from Darwin Cem and Shattuck Cem to the remote West Prairie Creek Cem near the southern boundary. The topography is largely low-lying floodplain, punctuated by features like Big Knoll and drained by a network of waterways including Prairie Creek, Sugar Cr, and Hayworth Slough. A grid of county roads, such as Iron Bridge Rd and Gravel Pit Rd, provides access to these isolated landings and farmsteads.
