Indian Head Pass serves as a central landmark in this high-desert portion of San Juan County, where the eastern reaches of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area meet an intricate system of drainages. The landscape is defined by deep incisions like Dark Canyon, Lean-To Canyon, and Fortknocker Canyon, which carve through the high plateaus of Dry Mesa. Transportation in this remote area is limited to primitive routes such as the Sun Dance Trail and several unpaved access points including Squaw Rock Rd and Horse Tanks Rd. Unique geological formations like Squaw and Papoose Rock and prominent overlooks at Lost Canyon Point and Black Point provide orientation across the vast vertical relief. The presence of Lower Horse Flats indicates rare level ground amidst a network of canyons that includes both Short Canyon and Long Canyon.
