The Algodones Dunes dominate the eastern landscape of this Imperial County region, marking a stark contrast between the desert sands and the intensive irrigation of the western basin. Water management is the primary driver of development here, centered on the Coachella Canal and the Alamo River. These systems support a network of agricultural infrastructure, including a filtration plant, Flowing Wells, and numerous feedlots.

Settlement patterns are largely tied to the transportation corridors running northwest to southeast, featuring small locales such as Iris, Tortuga, and Amos, the latter of which includes a local Cemetery. To the north, the terrain rises into the Chocolate Mountains, much of which is designated as a Military Reservation and Aerial Gunnery Range. Along the western edge, the Calipatria State Prison stands as a significant modern landmark near the wetlands of the Imperial State Wildlife Area (Finney-Ramer Unit), where Finney Lake and West Lake provide critical habitat.
