The Edisto River meanders through the heart of this Lowcountry landscape, defining the boundaries where Colleton, Dorchester, and Charleston counties meet. In the late 1970s, this area remained largely defined by its wetlands and river-oriented history, with the Big Swamp and Tupelo Swamp dominating the drainage patterns. Settlement is concentrated along the Seaboard Coast Line railroad and highway corridors, most notably at Jacksonboro and Parkers Ferry.
