John Coulee and the surrounding drainage basins define this portion of the northern plains along the border of Blaine and Phillips counties. The landscape is characterized by a network of deeply incised seasonal watercourses, including Buck Coulee, Hay Coulee, and the evocative Kills At Night Cr. This high-altitude prairie environment is navigable via a handful of primary unpaved routes such as Timber Ridge Rd and Spencer Ridge Rd, which trace the higher elevations between the draws. The orientation of these roads and the branching patterns of Little Suction Cr and Cow Cr illustrate the traditional land use and movement patterns through this remote section of the Hays District, where water sources and topographic relief dictate the placement of ranching infrastructure and boundary lines.
