The high-altitude terrain of the White Mts straddles the rugged border of Mono County, California, and Esmeralda County, Nevada. Within the expansive Inyo National Forest, the landscape is defined by massive peaks and high-desert basins such as Chiatovich Flats and Perry Aiken Flat. This remote region was historically a site of resource extraction, evidenced by the presence of the Green Monster Mine and Evergreen Mine tucked into the northern ridges. The drainage patterns are complex, with the North Fork Perry Aiken Creek and South Fork Perry Aiken Creek carving deep paths through the wilderness toward the Nevada line. Notable summits like Pinyen Mountain and Juniper Mountain provide significant landmarks for understanding the topography of the Eastern Sierra's rain shadow as it appeared in the late 1980s.
