Keating sits at the dramatic confluence of Sinnemahoning Creek and the West Branch Susquehanna River, a historic junction for river navigation and transport in this part of Clinton County. The landscape is defined by the high, wooded plateaus of Savage Mountain and Bushley Ridge, deeply incised by countless drainages like Huling Branch and Cooks Run. To the north, the Kettle Creek Lake Dam impounds Kettle Creek Lake, a significant water-management feature that reshaped the valley floor.

Evidence of the region's isolated settlements and specialized place names appears in localities such as Bitumen and Cooks Run, alongside numerous descriptively named hollows such as Wildcat Hollow and Log Slide Hollow.
