The Lower Powder Valley serves as a focal point for this eastern Oregon landscape, where the Powder River meanders through a complex network of agricultural irrigation. A deep history of water management is visible through numerous named canals, including the Kennedy Ditch, Basche Ditch, and Emele Ditch, which redirect water across the valley floor to support local ranching and farming. High above the valley, the terrain is cut by significant drainages like Big Rattlesnake Creek and Beagle Creek.

Cultural landmarks and family-named infrastructure are scattered throughout the hills, most notably the Big Creek Cem and reservoirs such as Wirth Reservoir. Much of the central waterway is protected as the Powder Wild and Scenic River, preserving the character of the canyon as it transitions from the rugged uplands into the open valley.
