The Big Sable River and Hamlin Lake define the northern landscape of this Mason County region, which is largely encompassed by the Manistee National Forest. This 1982 provisional survey captures a transition between the protected timberlands of Grant and Free Soil townships and the developing institutional and agricultural lands of Victory and Sherman. Notable for local researchers is the presence of West Shore Community College in the southern portion of the map, situated near several long-standing cemeteries including North Victory Cem and Township Cem.
