About this map

High plains ranching and the arrival of the railroad define this landscape in north-central Montana. The Great Northern R R cuts a straight path through the southern half of the quadrangle, establishing the small settlements of Kremlin and Xenia along its route. Much of the surrounding Chouteau County remains a vast expanse of coulees and dry creek beds, where early homesteading is marked by family-named operations such as Connollys Ranch and Holden's Ranch.
