Brokeoff Mountains dominate this high-desert landscape in the southern reaches of Otero County, where steep limestone ridges and deeply incised canyons define the topography. The terrain is marked by a network of drainage systems, including the prominent La Paloma Canyon and Big Dog Canyon, which converge amidst the sparse vegetation of the Lincoln National Forest. Human presence is concentrated around water management and ranching, evidenced by scattered stock tanks such as Dutch Tank, Guadalupe Tank, and Lower Irabane Tank.

A single primary settlement, the Hepler Ranch, sits in the southeast, positioned near the junction of several drainages like Cistern Canyon and Rough Canyon. The presence of a Drill Hole in the south-central portion suggests localized exploration for resources. The eastern edge of the survey area is bounded by the dramatic rise of The Rim, which separates the canyon-cut interior from the higher elevations to the east near Upper Dog Canyon.
