Lake Norman dominates this landscape, its intricate shoreline of fingers and inlets defining the boundaries of Catawba, Iredell, Lincoln, and Mecklenburg counties. Created by the damming of the Catawba River, the reservoir at its 760-foot elevation has transformed the older rural geography of the Piedmont into a complex of waterfront communities like Sherrills Ford, Terrell, and Westport. Small family and community landmarks remain as anchors to the area's pre-reservoir history, including Gold Mine Island in the north and numerous country churches such as Motté Grove Ch and Webbs Chapel.
