Isle Royale Wilderness dominates this remote archipelago landscape, where the island's characteristic northeast-southwest linear ridges define the water's edge. Greenstone Ridge and Stanley Ridge run parallel to the shorelines of McCargoe Cove and Rock Harbor, creating a complex network of protected basins and narrow channels. The interior is a mosaic of elongated lakes, including the large Lake Richie with its distinctive Hastings Island and Birch Isle.
