Lake Sutherland lies at the heart of this landscape, its northern shore defined by the settlements of Maple Grove and Snug Harbor. To the south, the terrain rises sharply into the Olympic National Forest and the Olympic National Park, where the high elevations of Mt Storm King and Lizard Head Peak dominate the skyline. This area reflects a distinct transition from lakeside residential pockets and small aviation facilities like Big Andy Airport to the wilderness of the Olympic Mountains.

The hydrography is particularly complex south of the lake, where Hughes Creek, Barnes Creek, and Happy Lake Creek drain the steep slopes surrounding Happy Lake. A network of mountain trails and forest roads, including the Olympic Mtn Trl, provides access to these high ridges. In the northern reaches, the community of Ramapo sits near the drainage of Whiskey Creek and Salt Creek, showing the scattered rural development typical of the Olympic Peninsula's foothills.
