About this map

Sol Duc Hot Springs and the headwaters of the Olympic Peninsula's major river systems define this 1930s landscape. This survey captures a moment when the Olympic National Forest and Olympic National Park boundaries were actively being delineated, showing a wilderness infrastructure of backcountry shelters and guard stations. Notable sites include the Jackson GS, Hyak GS, and several trailside refuges like Mt Tom Shelter and Happy Four Shelter. The terrain is characterized by high alpine basins and peaks, including the prominent Mt Tom and the Seven Lakes Basin. The drainage patterns of the Bogachiel River and Hoh River are mapped in detail, alongside the Soleduck Road providing early automotive access to the springs. This tactical map was uniquely prepared by the Corps of Engineers, U. S. Army using five-lens aerial photography, a technological milestone in the mapping of the Pacific Northwest's interior.
