The Des Moines River carves a deep, winding path through this agricultural landscape north of Jackson, following a corridor of wooded terrain that contrasts with the surrounding tableland. The local history of Jackson County is anchored by two hilltop burying grounds, East Belmont Cem and West Belmont Cem, which overlook the river valley from either side. The landscape is a study in early 20th-century water management, where complex drainage systems like Judicial Ditch Number Thirtyseven and Judicial Ditch Number Eightytwo have modified the prairie to support farming. Recreational and natural spaces are concentrated along the river bluffs, featuring the Killen Woods Trl and the Des Moines River Trl, while isolated water bodies like Boot Lake and Clear Lake remain as vestiges of the region's original glacial topography.
