Deschutes National Forest encompasses a landscape defined by volcanic activity and unique geological formations. Central to this area is the Newberry Volcano, whose historical eruptions created the eponymous Lava Cast Forest. This feature preserved the shapes of ancient trees encased in lava, forming a distinct environment that includes Hoffman Island. The topography is characterized by numerous volcanic peaks, or buttes, such as Ikt Butte, Mokst Butte, and Sugar Pine Butte.
