Poplar, Leader, and Ellis form a sparse network of rural settlements across this Cass County landscape, defined by a complex web of tributaries. The topography is shaped by the southward flow of Swan Creek and its companion, Little Swan Creek, while Tower Creek and Martin Creek meander through the western sections. This 2010 survey illustrates a region largely dedicated to agriculture and natural drainage, with few large bodies of standing water beyond Hardwood Lake in the northeast and Mud Lake in the southwest.
