Poplar and the surrounding Cass County countryside are defined by a network of creeks and wetlands that crisscross this section of Central Minnesota. The landscape is dominated by the flow of Little Swan Cr and its parent Swan Cr, which wind through the southern townships near the settlement of Ellis. These watercourses, along with Tower Cr and Martin Cr, drain a terrain filled with seasonal basins and small lakes like Hardwood Lake and Mud Lake.
