About this map

The Cape Fear River and Brunswick River dominate this landscape just west of Wilmington, where industrial growth meets tidal wetlands. In the early 1980s, the Seaboard Coast Line railroad infrastructure, including the expansive Davis Yard, defines the southern corridor near the towns of Leland and Navassa. This area is marked by a transition from heavy industrial sites, such as the industrial waste ponds and the large Lake Sutton, to the intricate bay and swamp systems of Roan Island and Dollisons Swamp. Local history is preserved in several small congregations and burial sites, including Hooper Chapel, New Hope Ch, and the isolated Rhyne Grave near the Black River. The map also captures several distinct landing points along the riverbanks, including Peachtree Landing and Strawberry Hill Landing, reflecting the region's deep water-based heritage.
