Lemay occupies a lonely station along the rail line traversing the desolate salt flats of Box Elder County. This 2020 survey illustrates a landscape defined by industrial-scale water management and topography, most notably the Newfoundland Evaporation Basin which dominates the central and southern reaches of the quadrangle. To the southeast, the terrain shifts abruptly as the northern fringes of the Newfoundland Mountains rise from the basin floor. The map provides a stark look at the geometric precision of modern land surveying against the ancient, uncompromising bed of the Great Salt Lake desert, where transportation and mineral extraction represent the primary human imprints on the terrain.
