Grand River National Grassland dominates the central landscape of this western South Dakota region, where the open prairie is bisected by the winding course of the Grand River. In the southeastern portion of the survey, Lemmon Lake serves as a primary water feature, fed and drained by a network of seasonal drainages including Thunder Hawk Cr and its eastern fork, E Thunder Hawk Cr. The topography is defined by these water systems and the low-lying draws they create across the grasslands of Perkins County. A sparse grid of rural roads, such as Lemmon Lake Rd and Dewitt Rd, provides access through the expansive public lands. Notable landmarks like Airport Rd and Dog Tooth Cr help orient researchers exploring the drainage patterns and land divisions of the northern plains.
