The Yellowstone River cuts through the northern reaches of this Custer County landscape, serving as a primary geographic anchor for the small settlements of Ulmer and Paragon. The river valley provides a narrow corridor of relatively level ground where the Paragon Bridge facilitates crossing near the mouth of Reservation Cr. This northern section stands in sharp contrast to the dissected uplands that dominate the remainder of the quadrangle, where a dense network of drainages including Lignite Cr, Coal Cr, and Moon Cr have carved a complex topography.
