The San Miguel River valley anchors the northeastern corner of this high-elevation landscape, where the small settlement of Sawpit sits along the Co-145. The terrain is defined by a series of expansive plateaus, including Beaver Mesa, Specie Mesa, and Wilson Mesa, separated by the steep dramatic drop of Specie Creek Canyon. These mesas represent the transition from the river valley to the peaks of the Uncompahgre National Forest.
