About this map

The international boundary between Canada and the United States defines the diagonal western edge of this remote wilderness survey. In the mid-1950s, this portion of the Maine North Woods remained largely inaccessible except by trail, centered on the waters of Little East Lake and its neighbor East Lake. The drainage network is the primary feature of the landscape, with Pocwock Stream and Chimenticook Stream flowing through the unorganized townships of T 17 R 14 and T 16 R 14. The map reveals the intricate headwaters of the Saint John River basin, including the North Branch and South Branch systems. This survey was compiled from aerial photographs taken in the early 1950s and ground-checked in 1955, providing a clear record of the watershed before modern commercial logging roads heavily altered the forest structure in Aroostook County.
