The Spokane River carves a significant path through this portion of eastern Washington, creating the Little Falls Reservoir and the Spokane River Arm at the border of Stevens and Lincoln counties. This area is characterized by the convergence of water resources and rugged terrain, including the steep-walled Tamarack Canyon and Smeltzer Canyon. The settlement of Little Falls serves as a focal point near the river's bend, while much of the northwestern portion is dedicated to the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. High points like Sherwood Mtn and Bald Ridge overlook a network of Bureau of Indian Affairs routes, such as BIA Hwy 27 and BIA Hwy 31, which provide access to the hinterlands between the river and the surrounding canyons.
