Gunnison National Forest and the northern reaches of the Curecanti National Recreation Area dominate this high-altitude landscape in Gunnison County. The terrain is defined by deep drainages and prominent mesas, most notably the broad expanse of Soap Mesa and the eastern edge of Dillon Mesa. These landforms are separated by a complex network of canyons and gulches, including the steep-walled Oregon Gulch and Mill Gulch, which funnel water toward the southern basins.
