Little Soldier Mtn and the surrounding wilderness of the Challis National Forest dominate this landscape along the border of Valley and Custer Counties. The territory is defined by the steep drainage basins of the Middle Fork Salmon River, where landmarks like Marble Creek Rapid and the Sheep Creek Bridge indicate the few points of human passage through the canyon. At higher elevations, the Little Soldier Lookout stands as a focal point for forest management and fire monitoring across the Sheep Mtn Ridge. This 2017 survey illustrates the remote character of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness area, where small clearings like Sunflower Flat and the isolated Thomas Creek Airport provide the only infrastructure. Numerous watercourses, including the Rapid River and Marble Creek, carve through the complex terrain toward the river below.
