This territory is split by the administrative boundary of Boise National Forest and Challis National Forest, highlighting a period of active fire management and backcountry oversight. Evidence of this is found at the Norton Ridge Lookout and the Mahoney Creek Lookout Heliport to the south.

The presence of the Mitchell Ranch along Marble Creek provides a rare point of private habitation within the federally managed forest lands. Water dominates the topography, from the high headwaters of Doe Creek and Birch Creek to the significant corridor of the Middle Fork Salmon River in the southeast corner. This survey documents the network of primitive trails that served as the primary means of traversal through Prospect Canyon and across the numerous forks of Mahoney Creek before modern infrastructure reached these canyons.
