About this map

Livingston Peak dominates the northern reaches of the Absaroka Range within this 1951 field-checked survey of the Gallatin National Forest. The landscape is defined by high alpine basins and steep drainages, including West Baldy Basin and East Baldy Basin beneath the primary peaks. To the southeast, Mount Delano and Elephanthead Mountain stand above a network of waterways such as Mission Creek and Blacktail Creek, which feeds into the small Blacktail Lake. Human activity is concentrated along the forest boundary at the northern edge of the sheet, where established mountain operations like Triangle Ranch and 63 Ranch mark the transition from the high peaks to the lower valleys. The presence of the Forest Boundary and the proximity to the Deep Creek Ranger Station illustrate the mid-century federal management of these mountain lands.
