The Missouri River carves a deep, winding path through the heart of the Missouri River Breaks in this modern survey of the border between Petroleum and Phillips counties. Central to the landscape is the expansive Fort Peck Lake, which fills the valley floor and creates the distinctive U L Bend at the south end of the sheet. The terrain is defined by a complex network of dry drainages and coulees, including Coburn Coulee and Dam Coulee, which cut through the high plains toward the river valley.
