Locke Ranch sits at the northern edge of this remote central Montana landscape, where the Missouri River transitions into the expansive waters of Fort Peck Lake. The geography is defined by deep breaks and coulees, including Coburn Coulee and Cart Coulee, which drain toward the river's edge. The notable U L Bend illustrates the serpentine path of the waterway before it was altered by the reservoir. A network of primitive routes like Musselshell Trl and Midale Rd provide the only passage through this sparsely settled terrain, connecting isolated landmarks like Hawley Flat. Several drainages, such as Hawley Cr, Jim Wells Cr, and Sula Cr, score the high plains, offering a detailed view of the regional hydrology and the boundary between Petroleum and Phillips counties.
