Deerlodge National Forest covers much of this high-country landscape where the boundaries of Deer Lodge, Jefferson, and Silver Bow counties meet. The mountainous terrain is defined by the Continental Divide, which separates the drainages of the Boulder River and Orofino Cr. Several prominent gulches, including Kit Carson Gulch and Strozzy Gulch, indicate a history of local exploration and possible prospecting, characteristic of the regions surrounding Butte.
