About this map

Lonoke serves as the focal point of this Central Arkansas landscape, situated along the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific railroad line. The settlement pattern of the late 1930s is preserved here, showing a transition from the agricultural uplands near Old Austin to the low-lying wetlands of the Wattensaw Bayou and Two Prairie Bayou. A significant historical site is the Camp Nelson Confederate Cem, located near Sylvania. The economy of the era is evidenced by the State Fish Hatchery south of the county seat and the Marson Club near the Carlisle boundary. Dozens of rural institutions, such as Campground Ch and Brownsville Sch, are documented before post-war consolidation altered the rural fabric of the county.
