El Malpais National Monument covers much of this landscape in Cibola County, preserving a complex volcanic and sandstone environment. The terrain is marked by significant geological features including the Sandstone Bluffs Arch and the narrow passage at Little Narrows. The volcanic history of the region is evident in the presence of Spatter Cones near the settlement of Los Pilares.
