The Bienville National Forest covers much of the northern landscape in this area of Smith County at the turn of the millennium. The terrain is defined by the winding course of the Leaf River and numerous tributaries such as Shongelo Creek and Bowling Creek. This survey captures the rural character of the region, anchored by the town of Raleigh in the west and Sylvarena to the southeast.
